Drug addicts and rock stars…

Saturday, March 13th, 2010

So I had a two-on-one appointment with one of my team members this morning. She is awesome. She had met a young man at the bowling alley (he is 28) who wanted to know more about our business. Well, from second one he had little interest or ability to listen to anything. His story changed at least three times during the short conversation. Not one of our better appointments. He was asked towards the end of our conversation what he would do if he were making an extra 17k per month? This was somewhat revealing; “I would buy coke and put it up my nose.”

Ok, so maybe he wasn’t our next superstar. But my associate was. She told him that he wasn’t the guy we were looking for. She was polite, but firm. We don’t always talk to the right people, but people none the less, can be fascinating. Rachel, my associate, has my eternal respect and admiration.

After that I went to breakfast with one of the MLM industry’s true rock stars, Mr. Tom Chenault. Tom also happens to be my upline leader. I’m tough on my upline leaders. I have been around and they have to know their onions. Tom does. Our conversations are frank, honest, sometimes brutal and always enlightening. I hate him…And I love him too. While I don’t always like or agree with what he says, I always appreciate that he has the courage, conviction and compassion to say it.

Today was no different. We talked about developing leaders and disagreed about developing leaders. We talked about building a business and disagreed about building a business. Do I think he is wrong?….nope, just different approaches. Now to my point…I still learn from Tom and, even when he provokes me, I force myself to be totally accountable to him. He is my upline, my friend, my respected peer and my accountability partner. If you choose to find someone that skilled and that experienced, who you let that far in, you will be going places. I highly recommend it.

Your products and autoship…

Monday, March 1st, 2010

Hopefully it goes without saying, autoship is one of the cornerstones of your business. If you aren’t on it, you can’t expect your team members to be on it. If you aren’t on it, you simply won’t be successful in your business. If you can’t embrace autoship, get the hell out of network marketing! Really, you don’t have any chance of being successful. The industry doesn’t need another non-accountable idiot blaming everyone but them self for failure when they aren’t willing to do what it takes to win.

That being said, it’s easy to maintain an autoship. Just use your own products. If you don’t like them enough to use them regularly, you’re with the wrong company. With most companies, a few pills, or drinks, or laundry loads, or meal replacements, or beauty sessions and you’re all set. If you are using your own products it is enhancing your life and you are easily meeting your autoship obligations.

Frankly, you’re only 1000 or so autoships from declaring your independence from the corporate system. It all starts with you. Your infectious enthusiasm for the possibilities that life has in store for you and your team members is all you need to win. Yes there is work involved and being persistent and consistent for 5-10 hours a week, every week is IMPORTANT. On the other hand, TV isn’t going to pay you 10 grand a month, no matter how much you watch.

Embrace the fundamentals, use and promote autoship.

Leaders show up….

Sunday, February 28th, 2010

My wife Pattie posted my schedule on Google calendar so my team members could see when I am busy and schedule my time if they want to.  By surrendering to this I am finding that most of my time is booked in advance with three-ways and two on ones.  This, of course, also makes my time more valuable to both me and my team members.

She also has scheduled all the meetings and functions that I will be at in advance.  So every Monday evening is scheduled in advance, also Wednesday evenings,  a Sunday conference call that I do with the 14 Diamonds that I have on my team, plus lunch on Thursday and Friday that I have with my two Double Diamonds, the monthly Saturday trainings that we do, Company Convention in April, a team cruise in September, and two quarterly events at home in late July and a holiday party in December.

How do I know who my leaders are?  They show up too.  Leaders attend the meetings and functions.  Leaders are a big part of the team culture.  They know how important it is to participate, set the example and promote participation.  All of these things keep you in the game and keep your team members in the game.  Once you let yourself drift away…you’re toast.

You simply cannot succeed in a big way by being a wondering generality.  Commitment is EVERYTHING to your ability to succeed.  It keeps you going and it’s how others judge whether they are going to join your business or not.  If your sponsoring is down, look in the mirror.  You will either see someone who shows up…or not.  You will either see someone destined to acquire their dreams…or not.

Leaders show up to succeed….do you?

Best of success,

Immerse yourself in the team culture…

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

You’ve been involved in your network marketing business for a couple months.  You’ve been to an opportunity meeting and now you’re at home watching NCIS.  “I don’t have anyone going to the meeting, why should I go?” Well, its the culture stupid!

I know, you’re smarter than everyone else.  You’ve got no one coming so it’s a waste of time for you to be there.  Besides, NCIS is far more important to your future.  Well my friend, you don’t know it yet, but you’re already toast.  You’re gone, kaput, road kill.  And it’s your own darn fault!

In an alternate universe,  the one where you’re successful…you’d be attending all the meetings and functions.  In that universe you know how critical it is to immerse yourself in the culture. There, you’ll know that no one has ever had a life changing epiphany while watching prime time TV.  You’ll know the importance of being involved.  You’ll know it’s good to be around excited, happy people who are all moving toward a common goal.  In that universe you are a strong team player and you’re supporting others with your presence.  In that universe, you aren’t selfish!

In order to get what you want out of the business, you have to give something in to it.  You have to participate.  You can’t do it by yourself, we all need to be a part of the culture to succeed in it.  If you could do it by yourself, you would have already done it.  When you’re ready to win, to really win, you’ll get committed to the process.   Part of that process is showing up.

Immerse yourself in your team’s culture, it’s part of your road to success.

When it comes to network marketing, if you can’t learn to do it well, you should learn to enjoy doing it badly and do a lot more of it…

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

So you want to be a network marketer but you just can’t get the hang of it.  You’ve read all the books, you’ve listened to all the cd’s and you’ve attended every meeting and seminar that you could.  Have you tried going to see someone to tell them about your business?  If you don’t know it yet, activity will create knowledge but knowledge won’t create activity…and it takes activity to build a network marketing business!

Time and time again I see people that never get started because they don’t know everything there is to know about the business yet.  “What if someone asks me a question that I don’t know the answer to?” Well maybe you could say something like, I don’t know, let me find out for you.  MLM is such a simple business.  You go share the opportunity and products with people and they tell you if they want to join you or not.

You’ve probably heard that the answer is always no until you ask.  If you are afraid to contact the people on your list because they might say no, your worst fears have already come true. Since you’re afraid to ask, they’ve already said NO! Want to over come your fear?…go see some people.  Want to learn more about the business?…go see some people.  Want to build a network marketing business?…go see some people.  Want to make a lot of money?…you probably get the idea.

GO SEE SOME PEOPLE!

Sounding like Big Al…

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009

Ok, I admit it, I’m going to sound exactly like Tom Big Al‘ Schreiter here.  Mostly because I stole the bulk of this material from him.  Or at the very least he was a huge inspiration for it.  So why repeat it?…cuz it’s true!  No…it’s really true!!!  What’s true?  I’m glad you asked.

“We all do network marketing anyway, why not get paid for it?”…Tom ‘Big Al’ Schreiter.

When was the last time you saw a good movie and recommend it to a friend, who recommended it to a friend, who recommended it to a friend.  You may have started a chain of recommendations that caused hundreds of people to see the movie, buy snacks at outrageous prices and make a lot of money for the local movie theater.  Did you get an end of the month “word of mouth” bonus check from the movie guys? If not, you just participated in network marketing, but you didn’t get paid for it.

Don’t feel bad, most of us do just that everyday. We recommend stuff we like, to our friends and coworkers, who buy it too, and we get nothing for it.  Probably not even a thank you from your friend.  This caused me to think several years ago…How can I be so stupid!  Frankly, I don’t have the stamina to tell you all the reasons for that, but hopefully you may get the point anyway.  All network marketing is…is a network of people who know each other sharing things they like with each other.

So the question is, why are you still network marketing and NOT getting paid for it?

Compress activity and collapse time frames…

Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

Getting there isn’t easy and it isn’t fast. But you can compress it all down into shorter time frames if you want to. Imagine for a moment that you want to mow your lawn. Believe it or not there are two ways you can do it. Let’s say it takes an hour to get the job done. You could do it all at once or you could mow 10 minutes a day worth. Both ways get the job done, but as you might imagine, with very different results.

Lets say you want to sponsor 12 people over the next year. You could do that by sponsoring 1 person per month or, sponsor 12 people in the first month and work to help each of them build their businesses for the the rest of the year. One of these ways will create excitement and momentum and a potential business explosion. The other will get 12 people sponsored, but not much else.

Take what you had planned to do over the next 12 months and make it happen this month. Take what you were going to do this month and do it this week. Take what you were going to do this week and get it done in the next 24 hours. By doing this you are compressing one year’s worth of activity into one month. Over the next 12 months after that you can collapse 12 years worth of accomplishments all the way down into one year.

It’s amazing what you can get done if you put your mind and your activity into it. Over the next 24 hours why not plan out your October to achieve your next rank advancement. It’s a perfect time to do this because October is traditionally one of the two best months in network marketing. After you have your rank advancement for the month planned out, after you have plotted exactly how many appointments and phone calls you must make to hit the next level in October…go get it done in the first ten days of the month!

YOU are about to become a network marketing machine! You’re going to be amazed at the results.

Go Get Em,

Keeping in the game…

Monday, September 28th, 2009

I love people that read great books and listen to cd’s and attend seminars. These things keep you in the game.   You can’t win if you don’t stay in the game.  Most people quit because they run out of inspiration.   There is nothing like a tank full of inspiration to keep us dreaming.  Read the books, listen to the cd’s, attend the seminars.   Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant said:

“It’s not the will to win, but the will to prepare to win that makes the difference.”

You have to prepare.  The will to prepare to win is at the heart of all championship play. I guarantee that if the game is coming down to the wire and the scoreboard says it’s all tied up, the team that is the most prepared will win every time.  An hour a day consulting about your business and your life with the experts will make all the difference.

Get out of bed a half hour early, read something that will give you the edge.  Listen to business cd’s in your car instead of one of those goofy stations that plays those same old songs you’ve heard over and over again for the last 10 years.  Attend meetings, conventions and generic seminars.  Listen to the Home Based Business Radio Show every Saturday morning!

Prepare to win and you will win.

Getting better…

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

Network marketing is a career, not a company.   It’s about working to get better all the time.  Someone once said that MLM is nothing but personal development with a comp plan attached.   I tend to agree with that.  Richard Brooke says:

“How you and I act creates our value in the world … to the people around us like family, friends, coworkers and clients. When we act with excellence, speak with excellence, listen with excellence, and behave as excellent as we can in the moment, we are valued, we are attractive, we are trusted and we are loved.”

So if personal development is such a great thing, how come it’s so tough?  I hate to hear how inadequate I am so darned often.  Every time I read a great self-help book or even a great business “how to” book, I find out something else about myself that I don’t like very much.  Something else I need to begin work on.  I feel like one of those highways that is always under construction.

Yet I know through experience that all the time I spend working on me, is the best time I’ve ever spent.  Yeah, getting better is tough, you’re constantly getting hot asphalt poured on you.  But the road to success is always under construction, you just have to keep working on it.
